This
is part of an initiative by the National Museum and House of Culture, here in
the City Centre, in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Force of Temeke
Municipality. This programme, which runs until the end of the year, aims at
fire and safety awareness training, as the ‘First Aid to Children.
’
They will also be taught skills to spot, together with fight, causes of fire
and how best to protect themselves, in case of any accidents. This is in
response to correcting a situation whereby there is a lack of knowledge within
homes and public places on reduces death, injuries to people together with
damage to property, by fire.
“This
calls for collaborative methods towards educating people, especially children
on how to spot fire, combat it and protect themselves, in case of any fire
accidents,” the museum’s Education Officer, Anamery Bagenyi, who is co-ordinating
the programme, said.
According
to her, this will minimise the damage of life and property, caused by fire,
while waiting for professional help. The programme, which is being sponsored by
five local companies, will cover 30 schools in Temeke Municipality, within
which approximately 22,000 pupils are expected to benefit. Such steps are taken
after having noted that children spend a large part of their time at home, as
opposed to parents. “The statistics for last year show that 101 homes were
damaged by fire.
We
want to make sure we reduce the dangers caused by fire,” Bagenyi said. When
talking to members of the media yesterday, Temeke’s Assistant Superintendent of
Fire (ASF) Laizer Loshpay, said the programmes which are to be carried-out at
the individual schools will take 80 minutes each.
However,
the grand finale will be done within the Museum’s grounds, in the city centre.
He emphasised that the programme will be taken throughout the country, district
by district followed by one region after another.
“Temeke
Municipality is being taken as a pilot study but we intend educating all pupils
in Dar es Salaam from next year and move out to other parts of the country,”
ASFLoshpay said. Before leaving a school, a Fire Assembly Point (FAP) will be
marked and the pupils together with staff taught how to use them
