OFFICERS from the Police Force’s Gender and Children Desks in Mara Region are attending an advanced training aimed at improving their efficiency in handling Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Violence against Children (VAC) cases.
The two-week training has been organised by Children’s Dignity Forum (CDF) a local non -governmental organisation in collaboration with the police force’s headquarters with the support of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Inspector Mohamed Mcheu, a trainer from the Tanzania Police Force’s Gender and Children Headquarters said the training will equip the participants with advanced skills on the proper handling of GBV and VAC cases.
Participants, mostly officers of the police gender desks are attending the training which began here on Monday. Before that the officials had attended a series of trainings that focused on how to help GBV victims, he said.
Thus the latest training, he said will further include children in-conflict with the law, sextortion and harmful practices like female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage. “The training will also include investigation skills on GBV cases and how to interview children who are in-conflict with the law,” Inspector Mcheu told the ‘Daily News’ in Tarime yesterday morning.
The participants will also learn better ways of cooperating to combat GBV and VAC cases in a bid to safeguards rights of children in the region that is rated as having high rate of injustices facing children especially girls.
During the training, all gender and police desks offices of the region will be provided with registers that will be recording GBV cases and how they are being handled from the beginning to the end. Ms Sophia Temba, the training coordinator from CDF said the training is part of the new initiative being taken to strengthen gender responsive reporting system (GRSS ) in the region.
“We want to get correct data of GBV cases and how they are being handled,” Ms Temba who is also the Child Protection Officer at CDF , said. For several years now, CDF has been implementing a wide range of programmers aimed at protecting rights of children in the region in Tarime.
The NGO is mainly putting much efforts on the campaigns against FGM , child marriage and teenage pregnancies. Mara is rated as one of the top five FGM practicing regions in the country.

FGM is said to be the source of child marriage and massive of school-drop outs. It is estimated that 1,600 girls were mutilated in some parts of Tarime District in 2014. Next FGM season in the region is expected to take place in December, this year.
